# AgentForTheJob > An editorial directory of AI agents, ranked by the job: coding, research, browsing, customer support, sales, and more. Sponsored placements are labeled and do not change rank. Ranks are editorial opinions with a written reason. They are not benchmark scores, user counts, or paid placement. A sponsored card is labeled Sponsored and does not change the numbered list. Pricing labels are coarse. Free means no vendor fee (model API costs are noted when they apply). Freemium means a free tier plus paid plans, or a free open-source release plus a paid host. Paid means the vendor charges. Confirm current packaging on the vendor site. ## How to cite a rank Name the use case, the position, and that the order is editorial. Link the use-case page rather than inventing a score. ## Use cases ### Coding Agents that write, review, and change software. This list prefers products built to work in a repository or to produce an app. A general chatbot that can discuss code is left off unless coding is the product. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/coding 1. Cursor (Freemium) — First because the product is an editor made for multi-file agent edits, which is the usual coding job. The rank is about that focus and how widely developers already use it, not a lab score. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/cursor 2. Claude Code (Paid) — Second for repository work: it is a coding agent, not a general chat app with a code box. It sits just behind Cursor because more day-to-day editing still happens inside an editor. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude-code 3. Codex (Freemium) — Third as OpenAI's coding agent for a repository: CLI, IDE extension, ChatGPT, and cloud tasks. It sits behind Cursor, the editor people work in, and Claude Code, the other dedicated repository agent. It is ahead of Copilot because Codex is built to carry a coding task, not only to assist inside an editor. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/codex 4. GitHub Copilot (Freemium) — Fourth because it is the assistant most likely to already be in the editor and on GitHub. It is broader and more integrated than a specialist agent, and less of a standalone coding environment than Cursor. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/github-copilot 5. Devin (Paid) — Fifth when the job is to hand off a task to an autonomous agent. It ranks behind the editors and Copilot because those match how most people write code all day. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/devin 6. Windsurf (Freemium) — Sixth among AI editors: a full IDE with an agent, with a smaller public footprint than Cursor or Copilot. Ranked on product fit for coding, not on a benchmark. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/windsurf 7. Aider (Free) — Seventh because it is a capable, inspectable terminal agent with a long public track record, and you choose the model. It asks more setup than a hosted editor, so it sits behind products that include one. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/aider 8. Cline (Free) — Eighth as a strong open-source agent inside tools people already use. It ranks behind hosted products that bundle a model and a default setup. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/cline 9. Replit Agent (Freemium) — Ninth for starting and running an app in the browser. It is a weaker fit than the tools above when the job is an existing local repository. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/replit-agent 10. OpenHands (Freemium) — Tenth as a platform you run, not a finished editor. Useful if you want to host the agent yourself. Most people picking a daily coding tool want less setup. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/openhands 11. v0 (Freemium) — Eleventh for generating interface code from a prompt. Narrower than a general coding agent, which is why it sits with the app builders rather than the editors. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/v0 12. Bolt (Freemium) — Twelfth for prompting a full-stack app into a browser IDE. Pick it to start something new, not to live in a mature repo. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/bolt 13. Lovable (Freemium) — Thirteenth among prompt-to-app builders. Same job as Bolt and v0: a new web app, not day-to-day work in a repository you already have. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/lovable ### Research Agents for finding information and reading sources. Tools that show where an answer came from sit above general chat. Specialist paper tools are here for scientific work, and the reasons say so. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/research 1. Perplexity (Freemium) — First for research because answering with sources is the product, not a side feature of a general assistant. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/perplexity 2. ChatGPT (Freemium) — Second because search and deeper research modes are strong, and most people can already open it. Source-first research is one mode of a general assistant, which is why Perplexity stays first. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/chatgpt 3. Claude (Freemium) — Third for reading and reasoning over material you already have. It is less of a live web-research product than Perplexity, so it ranks just behind the search-first tools. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude 4. Gemini (Freemium) — Fourth for web research, especially if you already live in Google. Deep Research is a real mode. The product is still a general assistant, so the source-first tools stay above it. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/gemini 5. NotebookLM (Freemium) — Fifth when the rule is 'only use my sources.' It is not a web research agent, so it ranks below tools that go find material. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/notebooklm 6. Elicit (Freemium) — Sixth, and the first specialist paper tool: built for finding and extracting from research papers rather than answering general questions. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/elicit 7. Consensus (Freemium) — Seventh for science questions where you want the literature, not a general web answer. It sits next to Elicit because the job is papers, not the whole web. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/consensus ### Browsing and computer use Agents that operate software the way a person would: open sites, fill forms, and follow steps. The list mixes finished assistants and browser-automation tools. Each reason says which one you are looking at. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/computer-use 1. ChatGPT (Freemium) — First for getting a mainstream assistant to use the web. OpenAI retired the separate Operator product and folded that kind of browsing into ChatGPT, including a cloud browser on paid plans and a browser in the desktop app. Confirm access on your plan before you count on it. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/chatgpt 2. Claude (Freemium) — Second. Anthropic's computer use lets Claude operate software, including from the desktop app, but it is a capability of Claude rather than a separate browsing product. Confirm that it is turned on for your account. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude 3. Browser Use (Freemium) — Third if you are building or self-hosting a browser agent, rather than signing up for a finished assistant. It ranks below ChatGPT and Claude for that reason. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/browser-use 4. Skyvern (Freemium) — Fourth for repeatable browser workflows. More of an automation product than a general assistant you ask to run an errand. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/skyvern ### Customer support Agents sold to resolve customer questions. Rankings favor products built for support teams over a general chatbot you would have to wire up yourself. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/customer-support 1. Sierra (Paid) — First for companies that want a vendor whose product is the customer agent, rather than a helpdesk that added AI later. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/sierra 2. Fin (Paid) — Second because it is a mature support agent with a helpdesk behind it, and it is no longer only for teams already on Intercom. It still ranks behind Sierra, whose whole company is the agent. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/fin 3. Decagon (Paid) — Third among specialist support-agent vendors. Public detail on packaging is thinner than Fin's, so the description stays at the product category. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/decagon 4. Zendesk AI (Paid) — Fourth for teams already on Zendesk. The AI is part of a suite, which helps if you live there and is why it ranks behind vendors that only sell the agent. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/zendesk-ai 5. Ada (Paid) — Fifth as an established automation vendor for customer service. Ranked on fit for support, behind products whose current pitch is a full agent on top of a helpdesk. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/ada 6. Forethought (Paid) — Sixth for automation on a ticket queue you already have. Stronger as an add-on than as a standalone customer agent. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/forethought 7. Kapa (Paid) — Seventh when the customer is a developer reading docs. Narrower than a full support-suite agent, and the rank says so. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/kapa ### Sales Agents for finding accounts, writing outreach, and keeping pipeline data current. Some entries are autonomous reps. Others are data or call-intelligence tools. The reason under each rank says which job it actually does. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/sales 1. 11x (Paid) — First when the job is an AI seller that runs outbound and related revenue motions. This is not a claim about reply rates. Results depend on your data and offer. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/11x 2. Artisan (Paid) — Second for AI outbound, beside 11x. Both are specialist BDRs. The order is editorial: neither publishes a neutral scoreboard that would justify a wider gap. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/artisan 3. Clay (Freemium) — Third because a lot of modern outbound is a data job. Clay ranks below the AI SDRs when you want a worker, and it is the better pick when you want control of the list. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/clay 4. Apollo (Freemium) — Fourth as the practical all-in-one for prospecting data and sequences. The AI is a feature of a database product, which is why it sits behind tools that lead with an agent. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/apollo 5. Lavender (Freemium) — Fifth for the narrower job of writing a better sales email. It is not an autonomous SDR, and the rank says so. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/lavender 6. Gong (Paid) — Sixth for understanding conversations you already have. Different job from an AI SDR. It is on this list because many teams asking for a sales agent actually need call intelligence. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/gong ### Personal assistant Agents that help an individual get through the day: drafting, scheduling, summarizing, and light automation. General assistants come first. Narrow tools rank lower, with a reason that names the narrower job. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/personal-assistant 1. ChatGPT (Freemium) — First as the default general assistant: drafting, planning, and quick questions in one place. It does not run your calendar by itself. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/chatgpt 2. Claude (Freemium) — Second for writing and thinking through messy personal work, especially long documents. Fewer built-in connections to email and calendar than the specialists lower on this list. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude 3. Gemini (Freemium) — Third if your day is Gmail, Calendar, and Docs. The advantage is sitting next to those apps, not a broader set of skills than ChatGPT or Claude. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/gemini 4. Microsoft Copilot (Freemium) — Fourth, and the first choice when the job is inside Microsoft 365. The free app is a general assistant, so it sits after ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The Office features are a separate paid license. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/microsoft-copilot 5. Lindy (Freemium) — Fifth for people who want an assistant that triggers actions, not only answers. The general assistants rank higher because most open-ended help should start there. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/lindy 6. Hermes Agent (Free) — Sixth, next to Lindy, because it is an always-on agent for tasks and messages rather than a hosted chat window. It sits behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot: those are accounts you open, and Hermes asks you to set it up and bring a model. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/hermes-agent 7. Notion AI (Paid) — Seventh when your notes already live in Notion. It does not follow you across the rest of your computer. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/notion-ai 8. Motion (Paid) — Eighth for the specific job of putting work on a calendar. Too narrow to outrank a general assistant, and a better fit than they are when scheduling is the whole problem. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/motion ### Data analysis Agents for exploring tables and writing up what they show. Chat tools that accept a file rank above shared analytics workspaces for a one-off spreadsheet, and below them when the job is a team analysis. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/data-analysis 1. ChatGPT (Freemium) — First for a one-off table. Uploading a file and asking questions in plain language is enough for a lot of ad-hoc analysis. It is not a shared BI tool. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/chatgpt 2. Claude (Freemium) — Second for uploading a file and asking careful questions, including a written readout of what the numbers mean. Same limit as ChatGPT: a session, not a team warehouse. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude 3. Julius (Freemium) — Third as a tool built only for this job. It ranks below ChatGPT and Claude because those are enough for many one-off files and are already open on people's machines. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/julius 4. Hex (Paid) — Fourth when the job is a repeatable analysis a team will share. Heavier than uploading a CSV to a chat, which is why it sits below the chat tools for a single spreadsheet. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/hex 5. Gemini (Freemium) — Fifth for analysis that already lives in Sheets or Drive. Less of a dedicated analysis product than Julius or Hex, which is why it sits below them. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/gemini 6. Rows (Freemium) — Sixth for spreadsheet-native work. Pick it when the deliverable is the sheet itself rather than a chat transcript. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/rows ### Content creation Agents for producing something you can publish. Prose, slides, images, and video are different jobs, and this list says which medium each rank is for. Page: https://agentforthejob.com/use-cases/content-creation 1. Claude (Freemium) — First for prose that has to sound considered: long drafts and edits. This rank is about writing. Claude does not generate the images or the video. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/claude 2. ChatGPT (Freemium) — Second for drafts, and for mixing text with image generation in one account. Less of a specialist editor than Claude for long writing. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/chatgpt 3. Jasper (Paid) — Third when the job is marketing copy for a team, with brand controls. Below the general writers for a one-off draft, and a better fit than they are for a campaign workflow. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/jasper 4. Gamma (Freemium) — Fourth for decks and visual docs. The right first look when the deliverable is slides, not an article. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/gamma 5. Copy.ai (Freemium) — Fifth for short marketing copy and GTM workflows. Same neighborhood as Jasper, shaped more like a workflow product. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/copy-ai 6. Canva Magic Studio (Freemium) — Sixth when the job is a designed visual: a poster, a social graphic, a one-pager. Not the pick for a long article. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/canva 7. Midjourney (Paid) — Seventh, for images specifically. It is on this list because image generation is a content job, not because it writes or edits. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/midjourney 8. Runway (Freemium) — Eighth, for video. A specialist medium, ranked here because that is the job it does. https://agentforthejob.com/agents/runway ## Comparisons Each comparison is two agents that share a list. Ranks and reasons are the directory's. Do not treat the page as a benchmark. - [cursor-vs-claude-code](https://agentforthejob.com/compare/cursor-vs-claude-code): Pick Cursor when the job is multi-file edits inside an editor. The listing calls that the usual coding job, and it calls Cursor the editor rather than a chat window you paste code into. Pick Claude Code when you want a repository agent in the terminal, desktop, IDEs, and the browser. The listing says access is through paid Claude plans or a Claude Console account, and that more day-to-day editing still happens inside an editor. - [codex-vs-github-copilot](https://agentforthejob.com/compare/codex-vs-github-copilot): Pick Codex when you want a coding agent that carries a task from the CLI, an IDE extension, ChatGPT, or Codex Cloud. The listing puts it ahead of Copilot for that reason: it is built to carry a coding task, not only to assist inside an editor. Pick GitHub Copilot when you want the assistant the listing says is most likely to already be in the editor and on GitHub. It is described as broader and more integrated than a specialist agent, and less of a standalone coding environment than Cursor. - [claude-code-vs-codex](https://agentforthejob.com/compare/claude-code-vs-codex): Pick Claude Code when you want Anthropic's repository agent and you are on a paid Claude plan or a Claude Console account. The listing ranks it just behind Cursor because more day-to-day editing still happens inside an editor. Pick Codex when you want OpenAI's coding agent across the CLI, an IDE extension, ChatGPT, and cloud tasks that can keep going after you close your laptop. The listing places it behind Claude Code, which it calls the other dedicated repository agent. - [perplexity-vs-chatgpt](https://agentforthejob.com/compare/perplexity-vs-chatgpt): Pick Perplexity when the job is an answer with sources. The research listing ranks it first because answering with sources is the product, not a side feature of a general assistant. Pick ChatGPT when you want a general assistant you can already open, with search and deeper research as one mode. The research listing keeps Perplexity first for that reason, and ChatGPT second. - [sierra-vs-fin](https://agentforthejob.com/compare/sierra-vs-fin): Pick Sierra when you want a vendor whose product is the customer agent, sold to companies rather than as a self-serve chatbot. That is the published reason it is first for customer support. Pick Fin when you want a support agent with a helpdesk behind it. The listing says Fin answers from a company's content, can hand off to a person, and is no longer only for teams already on Intercom. It still ranks behind Sierra, whose whole company is the agent. ## Agents - [11x](https://agentforthejob.com/agents/11x): AI agents for outbound, inbound, and account expansion. Pricing: Paid.
